“Are you up for some gratuitous Saxon violence? Then join us in Britain, 871 AD. Dying King Bagsecg needs reinforcements with a strong leader to cement the Viking position in central Britain. So he sends his son, Steinar, and his brutal associates, Grim, Jokul and Hagen, to find his vicious firstborn Hakan the Ferocious to take on the gathering Saxon armies. Ivar the Boneless is the last man to have seen Hakan alive before he mysteriously disappeared so Steinar sets out on an epic quest to find his long-lost older brother via witch hunts, traitorous battles, converted Christian warriors and enemy back-stabbing. For Hakan is hiding some devastating secrets in this old-fashioned high adventure romp through Beowulf and Game of Thrones style terrain from Farren Blackburn, director of Doctor Who and The Fades, and written by Matthew Read, scripter of the PUSHER remake. Hammer of the Gods Review

SteinarBy Nadine

On July 5th, Hammer of the Gods makes its US theatrical debut. The film is directed by Farren Blackburn and stars Charlie Bewley, best known for his role in the Twilight films and Clive Standen, who currently stars in the television show Vikings. Award-winning television director Farren Blackburn’s first foray into feature films is a brutal coming of age tale set in 871 AD in the time of Vikings. Hammer tells the tale of Steinar, played by Bewley, a young Viking prince sent by his dying father, King Bagsecg, on a quest to find his estranged brother, Hakan the Ferocious, in order to lead their army against the Saxons.

Filmed in Wales the lush beautiful backdrop contrasts brilliantly with the often violent imagery of the film. From the use of character titles in the opening scene, to the uniquely cut scenes, Blackburn’s television background is apparent throughout the film. The various fight scenes are well choreographed and effective in illustrating the unquestioned violence in the Viking world of Hammer of the Gods. While blood-filled the scenes serve the story line and aren’t gratuitous. Employing both modern language and a modern soundtrack Blackburn’s film is fast-paced and action-packed. Steinar’s journey from idealistic warrior to triumphant Viking leader can be broken into three distinct parts each underscored by the poignantly violent fight scenes that contrast well with Blackburn’s employment of scenes without dialogue.

Hammer has a strong supporting cast including Clive Standen who takes yet another turn playing a Viking as Steinar’s best friend and right hand in battle, Hagen. In his first starring role Charlie Bewley leads the cast with a strong and moving performance that belies his relative inexperience playing a lead character. Bewley is a master of the subtle art of facial expression and employs this skill to convincingly convey the complex emotional journey of his character. The nuances of Bewley’s physical performance give the character of Steinar a depth that the dialogue does not always allow. Through his performance you understand his struggle to resolve the internal conflict between his violent Viking upbringing and his own moral code. You truly feel Steinar’s ambivalent acceptance to violence as the film progresses. While Steinar is ultimately triumphant the viewer is left with the question at what cost?

Hammer of the Gods tagline says, ‘everyone must die’ and this is true even for Steinar whose own morality dies as he emerges victorious but irreversibly changed by the end of the film. Though filled with violence and brutality, Hammer of the Gods is a moving tale of transformation and self-discovery that viewers will enjoy.

Hammer of the Gods will make its UK theatrical premiere August 24th at Film4 FrightFest.
